Soutien au Traitement d’Archives Program of Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec
The Brome County Historical Society had the opportunity to submit several projects with a grant from the “Soutien au traitement d’archives” program, which were carried out by our team. Here are the details of these projects.
2020-2021 Project
"Collection of Photograph Albums of Families from the Historic County of Brome"
The BCHS received a one-year grant for the archival processing project entitled “Collection of Photograph Albums of Families from the Historic County of Brome’. The project began in August 2021 and was completed exceptionally in February 2022 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). It focused on processing a large body of pictorial material relating to the pioneer families of the historic County of Brome, with a view to making it accessible to our organization and the wider community. It had three main objectives:
-
Create a filing system pertaining to a collection of photographs of the region’s pioneer families for whom we hold historical records;
-
Describe each photograph and enter the details into our online portal in accordance with the Rules for Archival Description (RAD);
-
Process photographs (cleaning and storing them in acid-free envelopes and in specially designed boxes).
This project has enabled us to properly describe, process and store more than 1,500 photographic prints preserved in 19th-century family albums, as well as 81 mid-19th-century daguerreotypes and ambrotypes.
Directed by Anne-Marie Charuest and Nikolas Lamarre.
2024-2025 Project
"The Pioneer Families of Brome County – The French, Olmstead and Robb Families"
The BCHS received a one-year grant for the archival processing project entitled ‘The Pioneer Families of Brome County – The French, Olmstead and Robb Families’. The project began in June 2025 and ended in December 2025. It focused on processing a large body of textual and iconographic material relating to the pioneer families who traded in the historic County of Brome, namely the French and Olmstead families of Sutton and the Robb family of Knowlton. It had three main objectives:
-
Continue to build up an organic classification system for the archive collections of the region’s pioneer families, which we have been preserving since 1901;
-
Classify and describe textual and iconographic records (down to the item level) by entering data into the Eastern Townships Archives Portal, in accordance with the Rules for Archival Description (RAD), thereby making them accessible to the public in both French and English;
-
Systematically digitize textual records dating back more than 100 years and iconographic records (in TIFF format) with a view to both ensure physical preservation and secure digital archiving.
This project has enabled us to gain a better understanding of the family ties between the French and Olmstead families, and to learn about the members of the Robb family, spanning four generations, including the professional photographer Malcolm E. Robb.
Directed by Anne-Marie Charuest and Marc-André Lussier.
We would like to thank Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec for its financial support in carrying out these projects to highlight and give a new life to our archives.
