Travelling Exhibition: Black Histories in the Eastern Townships
May 16 - September 6, 2026
Created by the Eastern Townships Resource Centre, Black Histories in the Eastern Townships. It was created in 2022 by Dr. Sunita Nigam and Fabian Will. This exhibition explores a history that is often overlooked by historians and local interpretations, although the Townships have been a significant location for Black history in the Americas. We are honoured to host this travelling exhibition in the temporary exhibition gallery from May 16 through September 6, 2026.
This is a project that began in 2020 through the dedicated work of the heritage community, historians, academics, and artists. As we bring these stories to new audiences this summer, we are reminded that this exhibition is not a definitive history. It is an ongoing conversation that continues thanks to the efforts of those committed to preserving the full, complex picture of our history.
Exhibition & Curatorial Credits
Black Histories in the Eastern Townships exists as both an online exhibit and a physical display from the Eastern Townships Resource Centre (ETRC). The original outdoor exhibit was presented for free on the Bishop’s University campus in the Quad along the Johnson Building from February 2 until March 18, 2022.

This project has been made possible through generous funding by the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN) and the Secrétariat aux relations avec les Québécois d’expression anglaise (SRQEA).
The installation of this exhibition would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of our donors and sponsors. The Lac-Brome Museum extends its profound thanks to Quebec’s Ministry of Culture and Communications, and the town of Lac-Brome. We also wish to thank Kevin Crouse for his help with installation.
