This rifle belonged to Captain Asa Westover who commanded the “Red Sashes”—a home guard military unit from Missisquoi County—during the Second Fenian Raid. The Fenians, a group of Irish Americans, founded a secret society in 1857 to assist with the liberation of Ireland. The Fenians believed that by invading Canada, the British would be forced to free their homeland. They staged two raids, in 1866 and 1870.
