This fanning mill was purchased in Oshawa, Ontario by Molly Knowlton. However, it is believed that the mill was made by Chatham Fanning Mill Co. of Chatham, Ontario, around 1880. Manson Campbell (1830-1876)  invented this popular style of fanning mill and founded the Chatham Fanning Mill Company in 1868. His mill sold well across Canada and the United States, with over 39,000 units sold by 1893. Our fanning mill is still coated with its original paint and painted decorations. The machine was used to remove straw, chaff, stones, and dirt from grains like wheat, oats, and rye.

Cette vanneuse a été fabriquée vers 1880 à Oshawa, Ontario, fort probablement par W. T. Dingle Works. William Thomas Dingle a acheté l’entreprise de son fondateur, Charles Honey, en 1879. Du temps de Dingle, la « vanneuse améliorée Honey » est devenue un nom bien connu des fermiers de l’époque. Notre vanneuse possède toujours sa peinture et ses décorations d’origine. L’appareil était utilisé pour séparer la paille, l’ivraie, les pierres et les impuretés des céréales comme le blé, l’avoine et le seigle.
