At the end of the 19th century, having a highly decorative photo album could often be found on display in parlours and drawing rooms. This album, in particular, features a leather cover embossed to resemble a wooden door. The clasp is made of metal in a swirl design, and the pages are gold-trimmed. The album was begun by Sarah Knowlton (1822-1905), who was married to Hiram Sewell Foster. The album was completed by their daughter, Eunice Foster (1845-1912), who was married to the Reverend Charles Bancroft. It includes 36 identified studio portraits of family and friends linked to three generations of the Knowlton, Foster and Bancroft families.
